Copper Roof Repairs & Re-Roofing

All-Dry Roofing is experienced in the traditional methods of installing copper gutters, downpipes, rainwater-heads as well as full replacement of intricate copper roofs and spires. Copper is historically the roofing metal of choice - the standard for judging all others. Copper's longevity stems from two factors. Firstly, it is relatively inert and does not corrode when exposed to the elements and, secondly, the brown-green patina (which is actually a thin layer of surface corrosion) acts as a skin that protects the metal from further degradation.

Because copper can last hundreds of years its expense can be justified if the building is designed to survive as long as the roof. One of the most attractive and longest-lasting styles of roof is the standing-seam copper roof. This requires specific custom hand-tools and knowledge of some old-time techniques. With a standing-seam roof the sheets of metal are folded together to form a weathertight skin without penetration of the skin by fasteners. The metal is cut to length and bent into a "pan" having an angular, u-shaped profile. As the pans are laid edge to edge and fastened in place, the edges are double-rolled, or "locked" together by hand to create a standing seam. No sealants other than solder are used.

Correct preparation of the deck under a new copper roof is vital, with strict guidelines to be followed for the timber and underlay material. All-Dry Roofing recently replaced a two-meter high conical spire on a National trust building in Randwick, using a copper standing-seam design. (See photos below for "Nugal Hall"). We also replaced the copper roofing on a heritage Art-deco style building in Macquarie Street. (See photos below for BMA House).

BMA House

BMA House is a heritage art-deco style building in Macquarie Street in the city. The eight storey building has flat copper roofs on either side which had not been correctly installed when the building was originally built and consequently had been causing problems for a long time. The decision was made to replace them but this time to have the roof correctly fashioned so that there would be no problems in the future. In consultation with heritage architects All-Dry Roofing removed the original copper roof and rebuilt and reshaped the timber base under it. A copper "rib and tray" roof was then installed with all panels, box gutters, flashings, etc. fashioned and soldered by hand using traditional methods. The roof is expected to last in excess of 200 years before replacement may be required.

"Nugal Hall" Private Residence Copper Spire & Roof Section

The copper spire and smaller copper roof section were both badly hail-damaged in the 1999 hailstorm. The roof and spire areas were stripped and the timber frame rebuilt. All copper panels were custom-made for the job and installed using traditional methods. Heavier gauge copper was used so that in the event of a similiar storm there is less likelihood of extensive damage. This copper-seamed spire and roof will last in excess of 200 years.
